SDSU Statement: Wiley Journals

As you may know, the Library subscribes to over 1,300 academic journals published by John Wiley through a “big deal” package agreement negotiated by the Chancellor’s Office for many CSU campuses.  After extensive negotiations over several months, the CSU reluctantly decided against renewing the contract with Wiley due to the unmanageable proposed cost increase of 10-12%.  Our access to this package will end on January 31, 2015.

In response to the cancellation, the SDSU Library is analyzing usage statistics to determine the most critically needed journals and is actively pursuing alternative agreements and subscription options.  Our priority is to minimize the impact on our students and faculty.

Library faculty are consulting with departmental contacts to prioritize known usage.  Due to limited funds, it will not be possible to re-subscribe to all of the journals.  We anticipate relying on Interlibrary Loan to provide access to articles needed by SDSU students and faculty.  Priority will be given to items that were part of the cancelled package.

Attached is the full-text of a statement prepared by CSU Library Deans, with additional details about the situation:  CSU Libraries equitable access, public-stewardship, and access to scholarly information

Please contact Wil Weston (wweston@mail.sdsu.edu) Head of Collection Development, or Patrick McCarthy (pmccarthy@mail.sdsu.edu) Associate Dean, if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you.
